About Kajukenbo
Kajukenbo was created between 1947 and 1949 at Palama Settlement on Oahu, Hawaii, . A group named the "Black Belt Society", which consisted of black belts from various martial arts backgrounds, trained together and created Kajukenbo. This was the beginning of an evolutionary, adaptive style designed to combine the most useful aspects of the arts. As such, it was one of the first mixed martial arts styles that combined Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and other fighting methods into a systematic style adaptable to the needs and abilities of most people. Kajukenbo is particularly noted for its no-nonsense practical street self defense. However, students also study for personal discipline, self confidence, sports competition, and physical fitness. The principal organization representing Kajukenbo is the Kajukenbo Self Defense Institute (KSDI) founded by Sijo Adriano Emperado. The KSDI holds an annual seminar and tournament in Las Vegas every year, honoring the birthday of Sijo Emperado. For a more detailed history, numerous sources are available on the Web.
